Henley Boating Company is an up-and-coming boat hire company based in Henley-On-Thames, Oxfordshire. The business focuses on luxury boat charters along the River Thames, with its peak season in the summer months, especially the Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Festival.

Jim Sneddon, the skipper, and owner of the business got in touch with The Atom Lab late into 2019 with a vision to grow the business. With a lot of competition in the Henley area, he wanted to stand out and offer a service with a personal touch to the local boating enthusiasts.


The Brief

When Jim approached us, he already had a great online presence that he had built himself. Be that as it may, he wasn’t getting the results he wanted through it so Jim reached out to us looking to refresh his brand.

After examining his current website and his goals, we recommended a rebrand of the website so it appeals to the audience he wanted to reach. As well as that, we offered Jim to implement SEO improvements to his content so he could be discovered organically through Google.

The Solution

Straightaway, we noticed the great imagery that Jim already had of his boat, the river, and his amazing guests. With this in mind, we designed the new website in a way that highlighted the imagery. We used a minimalistic design style and created a luxury experience that reflected the ambitions of the brand.

Additionally, we focused on SEO. Although Henley Boating Company had a website previously, the text was not well optimised and needed reworking. Two key SEO benefits we noticed were the domain name and its authority. Not only was the domain name relevant to popular keywords (henleyboating.co.uk) but it was also a few years old, making it the perfect age for Google to rank higher in results.

After in-depth research into keywords, we were able to pinpoint certain words and phrases that would drive traffic to the site and grow the brand. By creating optimised blog content and implementing technical SEO edits, we managed to drive over 1,000 visitors per month to the website after 6 months of work. Not only were we able to get the website onto the first page of Google, but we were also able to place it in second place for multiple keywords.
